How to prevent a clogged drain:

How To Clear Clogged Drains

You can avoid clogging your drains by following a few simple steps, always try to use the food strainer to catch particle such as vegetables and hair in a bath tub, don’t pour grease down the drain. Pour boiling water down the drain once a week to melt the build up of grease, or every week put some vinegar and baking soda to break up the fat and to keep it smelling fresh.

To avoid clogging your toilet, avoid flushing female products and don’t flush baby wipes, paper napkins, floss, q-tips, watches or toy cars.

Remember the toilet plunger is a great tool if used correctly, it can be used on toilets and the kitchen sink. To use it properly make sure there is a seal and slowly start a plunging action without breaking the seal this momentum will create a wave of pressure onto the clog using the water to force its way through.. Don’t use a plunger if a commercial drain opener has been used the chemical can splash causing injury.

For grease buildup, add 1 lb of baking soda into 3 gal boiling water in a bucket and pour down drain. To avoid burns from boiling water, hold the bucket close to drain and pour slowly and directly into drain. For heavy grease buildup, use a commercial drain opener purchased from the local hardware store. Exercise extreme caution when using and follow label instructions exactly. (Commercial drain openers can also be used to clear hair buildup from bathroom drains.)

BEWARE OF CHEMICAL DRAIN OPENERS, plumbers can be injured cleaning a drain that has chemical drain cleaner added, they may need to charge extra for the service call. Chemical drain openers are only good for clogs at the fixture, don’t use a chemical drain opener on a drain that has been clogged for over a day.

If you drop jewelry down the drain, quickly turn the water off to avoid flushing the item through the pipe. Place a bucket or pan under the p-trap, using a wrench undo 2 nuts and gentle remove the trap pouring the water and its contents into the pan or bucket. Replace the trap if it leaks you may need to replace the washers. A plumbers trick, place plumbers putty between the nut and the pipe, when the nut tightens it will fill the gaps.
